A nod to 'the jazz institution'? Self-mockery too?

The story of Klankpowder started at Codarts. Drummer Ap Verhoeven wanted a "kind of free jazz" and bundled a few aficionados into a band. With high revs and low torque, something of a vehicle formed. Not really free jazz in the end, “in hindsight that wasn't quite our vocabulary after all”, but more song-like structures which, from time to time, evolve into a lot of energy. The band has found a balance “between ballads and chaos”.

A nod to 'the jazz institution'? Self-mockery too? “A little bit, yes. We want to make music seriously, but also want the audience to experience that we have a lot of fun together. It should be possible to hear a joke in the music now and then – that you as an audience smile or grin at what you hear.” The band is looking for that flexible element.
